Overview of the Lymantria dispar Digest

The Lymantria dispar Digest is a database containing information about Lymantria dispar defoliation and treatments at the national level. Treatments include those funded by the Lymantria dispar Suppression, Eradication, and Slow The Spread (STS) programs.

Eradication prevents establishment of the Lymantria dispar in uninfested areas by eliminating isolated infestations that occur as a result of human-aided movement of this pest.
Slow the Spread (STS) slows the rate of spread of the Lymantria dispar from the generally infested area and prevents infestation of 7 million acres per year in the transition area, thus delaying the impacts and costs that occur as the Lymantria dispar infests new areas.
Suppression reduces damage caused by outbreak populations of Lymantria dispar caterpillars in the generally infested area.

Lymantria dispar Management

The current USDA National Lymantria dispar Management program was first described, analyzed and adopted by the USDA Forest Service and the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in a programmatic environmental impact statement (EIS) in 1996. In 2012, an updated supplement to that EIS was approved and currently governs the two agencies financial and technical support for Lymantria dispar Suppression, Eradication and Slow The Spread activities. Included in the 2012 supplemental EIS (SEIS) are updated human health and ecological risk assessments associated with the Lymantria dispar program:

Lymantria dispar Pest Information

The Lymantria dispar Forest Insect and Disease Leaflet (FIDL) describes that the Lymantria dispar has been a primary defoliator of hardwoods in the eastern United States since its introduction in 1869. Currently, it is considered to be a permanent resident in all or parts of 19 eastern states and the District of Columbia. Isolated infestations of the insect due to movement of outdoor household articles and commerce in general often occurs. Such infestations when detected are targeted for eradication.

Reports of all Suppression, Eradication and Slow the Spread projects for Lymantria dispar by year since 2006 as collected by the National Pest Suppression Tracking System (NPST).
