The Watershed Needs Index model uses HUC12 as the base mapping unit and filters out watersheds that did not intersect NFS Lands. 7 input data layers were acquired, prepared and summarized by 6th level watershed (HUC12). These 7 indicators were then compiled into a single layer and the individual indicators were weighted to calculate a watershed needs index. Watersheds are first filtered to include only watersheds that have either been identified as priority watersheds during the Watershed Condition Framework process or that contain surface or ground water protection areas. These watersheds are then weighted based on the stressors and opportunity indicators. Priority watershed and SWP/GWP indicators are not included in the weighting, they are only used for filtering. Watersheds with an index of zero are identified as “Very Low” needs. |
