Service Description: The Land Allocation Mapping (LAM) project assembles current land allocation information contained in individual Land Management Plans into one agency dataset. The data includes Management Areas, Geographic Areas, and Recommended Designated Areas. LAM data may change because of an amendment, administrative change, or plan revision. Units are responsible for updating and maintaining LAM data to reflect their unit's current land management plan. Management Areas are land areas identified within the planning area that have the same set of applicable plan components and typically represent the management emphasis on the landscape. Where Management Areas are based on purpose, Geographic Areas are based on place. A typical Geographic Area map represents large areas that have desired conditions with a range of possible resource management emphases. Finally, a Designated Area is an area or feature identified and managed to maintain its unique special character or purpose. Some categories of Designated Areas may be designated only by statute and some categories may be established administratively in the land management planning process or by other administrative processes of the Federal executive branch.
