Description: Deliniated Kettle Crest Recreation Area as identified by Recreation Specialist Colville National Forest. Special interest areas are a category of administratively designated area with outstanding natural characteristics or unique recreation or cultural values. Special interest areas are managed as an integral part of the National Forest System with management emphasis placed on protecting the unique values for which each special interest area was designated. In this Forest Plan, special interest areas represent a unique type of management area that overlays the forestwide management direction and the specific management area (i.e. Backcountry, Backcountry Motorized, Scenic Byway, National Scenic Trail, etc.) direction that applies to the land base within each special interest area’s boundary. The difference between Alternatives O and P for the Kettle Crest Special Interest Area, is how the management area boundary is mapped and acreage sizes. Alternatives O and P are similar in that they would recognize and protect outstanding recreation opportunities in a semi-primitive setting for the SIA, but the boundaries and acreages vary. In Alternative O the SIA is 99,000 acres, and in Alterative P the SIA is 82,800 acres. Both alternative’s would recognize and protect outstanding recreation opportunities in a semi-primitive setting for the SIA,. The smaller acreage size in alternative P is to allow for continued motorized and mechanized recreation opportunities in that area.

Description: Alternative P responds to public concerns that wilderness designation may result in lower revenue to local economies due to reduced recreational opportunities. This alternative proposes less recommended wilderness than the proposed action and would create the Kettle Crest Special Interest Area to conserve outstanding recreational values in a semi-primitive setting while allowing multiple uses.
