Description: Alternative O responds to feedback from diverse interest groups and is based on a series of public, collaborative meetings hosted by the Forest Service that focused on motorized recreation, wilderness, and vegetation management. This alternative reflects areas of general agreement among participants in those meetings. Alternative O emphasizes summer and winter non-motorized opportunities in a backcountry, unroaded setting and minimizes recommended wilderness. In addition, the Kettle Crest Special Interest Area is proposed to provide outstanding recreational values in a semi-primitive setting while allowing other uses.

Description: Deliniated Kettle Crest Recreation Area as identified by Recreation Specialist Colville National Forest. Special interest areas are a category of administratively designated area with outstanding natural characteristics or unique recreation or cultural values. Special interest areas are managed as an integral part of the National Forest System with management emphasis placed on protecting the unique values for which each special interest area was designated. In this Forest Plan, special interest areas represent a unique type of management area that overlays the forestwide management direction and the specific management area (i.e. Backcountry, Backcountry Motorized, Scenic Byway, National Scenic Trail, etc.) direction that applies to the land base within each special interest area’s boundary. The difference between Alternatives O and P for the Kettle Crest Special Interest Area, is how the management area boundary is mapped and acreage sizes. Alternatives O and P are similar in that they would recognize and protect outstanding recreation opportunities in a semi-primitive setting for the SIA, but the boundaries and acreages vary. In Alternative O the SIA is 99,000 acres, and in Alterative P the SIA is 82,800 acres. Both alternative’s would recognize and protect outstanding recreation opportunities in a semi-primitive setting for the SIA,. The smaller acreage size in alternative P is to allow for continued motorized and mechanized recreation opportunities in that area.

Description: Alternative R is a conservation-oriented alternative that responds to public comments that support static late forest structure reserve land allocations and a 21-inch upper diameter limit on cutting live trees. Public concerns regarding the potential impact of the road and motorized trail system on aquatic, riparian, and wildlife habitats, including grizzly core areas and habitat connectivity, are addressed in this alternative as well. This alternative also responds to comments advocating for additional recommended wilderness and increased protections for fish, wildlife and watersheds.
