The forest structure disturbance need as shown is summarized by 5th field Hydrologic Unit Code (watershed). Disturbance can take the form of thinning, prescribed burning, wildland fire, insects and disease, or other treatments. The map is intended to provide a broad landscape context for restoration, and is not intended as a substitute for local planning and silvicultural prescriptions. Disturbance need reflects a departure from the natural range of variation, and the corresponding disturbance need to move landscapes within the natural range. Succession needs (the need for forests to grow into older seral stages) are also a consideration in restoration, but are not depicted here. Forest structure is only one consideration in restoration. This dataset was developed for the study described in DeMeo, T., Haugo, R., Ringo, C., Kertis, J., Acker, S., Simpson, M., and Stern, M. 2017. Refining our understanding of forest structural needs in the Pacific Northwest, USA. (Manuscript in preparation) |
