Service Description: The Research Natural Areas (RNA's) on our National Forests are protected for the purposes of maintaining biological diversity, conducting non-manipulative research and monitoring, and fostering education. RNA's help preserve our Nation's natural heritage for future generations. The protection afforded RNA's is a critical step in maintaining a range of biological diversity of native ecosystems and species. Because they are protected in a natural state, RNA's also provide valuable opportunities for monitoring of long-term ecological change, and comparison of the effects of resource management activities against unmanaged controls. While boundaries for candidate and recommended RNAs in this featureclass are believed to be most current and based on the best available information, they are not final and may change during the establishment process.

Comments: The Research Natural Areas (RNA's) on our National Forests are protected for the purposes of maintaining biological diversity, conducting non-manipulative research and monitoring, and fostering education. Boundaries of all existing fully established RNAs are separate and managed in the Land Status Record System (LSRS), made available through the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) as part of the ‘SpecialInterestManagementArea’ feature class and can be accessed using the following layer file T:\FS\Reference\GIS\r05\LayerFile\Land\Existing_RNA.lyr.The data is also available in ArcGIS Online at https://apps.fs.usda.gov/arcx/rest/services/EDW/EDW_SpecialInterestManagementArea_01/MapServerIn the latter case, the user must filter for AREATYPE = 'RESEARCH NATURAL AREA'.
