Service Description: This map shows the percentage of timber that is harvested compared to the annual growth, at a state level. Examining harvest in the context of tree growth and mortality helps describe the sustainability of timber harvest and net effects on forests. When growth exceeds harvest and mortality combined, total tree volume increases. Alternatively, mortality from disturbance events such as wildfireor bark beetle infestation can offset growth and reduce volume. Ensuring that harvest and mortality do not exceed growth over the long term is an important aspect of sustainable forestmanagement.
