The goal of Coated TerraLam Mat Field Study Project is to improve the durability and life of TerraLam CLT mats made from southern yellow pine. Sterling will be conducting on‐site field studies at active project locations to test the viability of different sealants and coatings with the intent of minimizing moisture uptake and extending the life of the mats. Testing will involve new embedded RFID chip technology for more efficient monitoring and tracking of different mats in the field tests. Improving the quality and durability of the TerraLam CLT mats will help expand the market for southern yellow pine through increased production and demand for the product. More customers will select the TerraLam CLT mats over less environmentally‐friendly alternatives.
Project objectives include: 1. Improve efficiency of the southern yellow pine mats. 2. Increased safety and lifespan of CLT mats. 3. Enhance and increase markets for southern yellow pine products which will benefit forest landowners. 4. Increase production of wood‐based CLT mats which supports the southern yellow pine market and create more high‐paying industry jobs. 5. Promote and communicate the value of southern yellow pine products within the industry.
