This project will design, engineer and install a system to automate the application of a patented, recycled plastic barrier wrap on wood posts and poles. As a biodeterioration resistance product, the barrier wrap increases the life expectancy of wood posts and poles placed into service with ground contact. It also expands the markets for small diameter Douglas-fir and Western larch posts, which are currently limited due to those species resistance to the penetration of chemical wood preservatives in pressure treatment.
Project goals and objectives are:
1. Develop new and expanded markets for both treated and untreated wood posts and poles.
2. Increase acres treated and decrease cost of management on National Forest System lands.
3. Increase employment in economically-distressed rural communities.
