The land allocation layers reflect the spatial decisions of the plan, they do not necessarily reflect inventories or program inventories. For mapping and analysis purposes, these data should be used in conjunction with other land data such as designated areas, recreation opportunity spectrum, scenic integrity, land ownership, etc. Acreage calculations are dependent on data sources, projections, methods of calculation, and changes in technology. The sources of data have improved with technology like GPS and digital survey equipment. Data projections have changed over the years giving us better measurement of length and area. Map data is almost always measured in a planar projection that yields accurate measurement of area for small areas but returns a less accurate area calculation over large areas because the curvature of the earth is not accounted for in a planar projection. This can cause small area calculations to not always add up to the sum of a larger single area. In some situations, the difference is only fractions of an acre, other times with large areas the difference can be many acres. With this GIS acreage, calculations may vary over time depending on data, projections, and technology. The current GIS area calculations are the best we have with the available data and technology at this time and may not reflect the same exact numbers of past or future calculations. Data completeness of management area reflects the contents of the forest/unit land allocation mapping standard datasets at the time this feature class was created.
